Parent Coaching can help you decrease the amount of emotional turmoil in your family. You can learn how to get out of the power struggles and establish effective limits. You can feel good about yourself as a parent again and be much more effective in providing support to your child.

Now, let's look at some specific aspects of parenting and Parent Coaching.

What is Effective Parenting?

An effective parent is one who is equipped to meet the challenges of parenting in today's culture. Effective parenting includes the establishment of effective limits, providing support for your child, and teaching them the values you want them to have. The following are five things that make up effective parenting.

First, effective parenting includes having defined one's goals as a parent. We need to know what we want to accomplish in our children. Another way to say this is that we know what qualities we want to develop in our children by the time they are adults.

Second, an effective parent has the love to invest time and energy in their children. Children will grow up with little effort from their parents. In that case, they grow up absorbing the values of society and develop the character traits of random learning. A child that is taught by a parent who models what they teach will tend to develop positive character traits that will result in a full, effective life. That is often one of the goals of a loving parent.

Third, the parent needs the skills to be effective. Like any job, the job of parenting requires skills. Most of the skills are interpersonal skills.

Fourth, knowledge of developmental stages, human development, motivation and so on are also helpful.

Fifth, knowing how to measure progress. You put effort into the task of parenting and need to know if you are succeeding. That is what makes it all worth it and gives us a good feeling about being an effective parent.

What is a Parenting Coach?

Parents often read the books, go to seminars, and take classes in parenting and still struggle with parenting issues. It comes down to practical application. What do I do in this specific situation? That's where I find most parents get stuck. It is so easy to get trapped in a behavior pattern that is loss/loss. Coaching helps get parents unstuck and into a win/win position. That is also win/win for the child.

The following are 4 aspects in which coaching helps.

First, coaching helps you clarify your parenting goals. What are the qualities you want to see developed in your child by the time they are adults. Another way of looking at goals is the family atmosphere. When we have difficulty parenting, there is often high tension in the family, negative feelings, and unresolved conflict. This is a painful atmosphere for everybody in the family.

Second, coaching helps you develop specific strategies to deal with each challenging situation you have with your child. It may be "What do I do when my 3 year old throws a temper tantrum," or "What do I do with my adolescent who has a drug problem."

Third, coaching helps walk you through the application of the strategies. This may involve helping you understand the principles underlying the strategy so you have more confidence in the strategy, or it may involve walking through the specific wording of applying the strategy. This step helps move the strategy from words to actions that get results.

Fourth, coaching helps you understand the principles involved in the strategies. When you know the principles behind the strategy and have experience in applying the strategy, you can then apply them to new situations as they come up.

In summary, parent coaching is an expert on parenting who can come along side you and walk with you through the difficult situations of parenting. In this process, you become better equipped to meet the challenges of parenting.

Doing Your Part

Parenting is a position and a job. Being a parent doesn't take much, just giving birth to a child which gives them physical life. The job of parenting is a much longer process that requires skill and effort over time. The job of parenting has to do with equipping your child for life.

What is the difference between Psychotherapy and Coaching?

Psychotherapy is best utilized when you are in pain, need to resolve past issues, relieve symptoms, and heal. Therapy focuses on relieving pain and suffering. It looks at the past and present problems.

Psychotherapy is done face to face usually in an outpatient setting. Most medical insurance plans cover psychotherapy, if you have a covered diagnosis.

Coaching is best utilized when you are looking to progress in an endeavor, to set and reach goals, to focus better and produce better results in your life. Coaching focuses on the excitement of moving forward in life to new heights. Coaching looks at our passions, and where we want to go and how to get there. If we are stuck, how do we get unstuck and accomplish our desired goals. Parent coaching applies these principles to the parenting process.

What are the physical arrangements for Parent Coaching?

Coaching is usually done conveniently over the telephone, which means you don't have to leave home and there is no travel time.

Cost of Parent Coaching?

Costs depend on the amount of time that you prefer to use. Weekly 25 minute sessions can be scheduled or more time can be arranged to meet specific needs. For specific cost, please contact me at the telephone number below.
